I'm learning to knit

Recently I decided that I wanted to learn how to knit. The problem was how would I go about it? I tried learning when I was a kid but didn't have the patience for it. Now that I'm older I feel more ready. I knew that having somebody teach me wouldn't be a very good idea-unless they're extremely patient, so I decided that the best way for me to learn would be in my own way and in my own time.

I decided to start off with the basics-some wool, those stick things you use to put the wool on and a book called 'How to knit'. However, I'm finding that even this book is too advanced for the way I want to learn. I want to know how to hold those stick things, what size a beginner should use- I have 7.0mm but feel that they are too long for a beginner like me and I want to know how to tie the knots and whether you can use one type of knot over another.

Childhood:come back I miss you!

Dear childhood,
what ever happened to you? You used to be so full of life and vitality now you seem to have given up. Can't you compete with the computer games? Or is it that you don't want to? Have the kids given up on you? Or have you given up on them? A few things I miss about you are:

Making cubby houses out of whatever you could find-tables, chairs, blankets etc
Running through the sprinkler (damn those water restrictions!)
Playing knock and run (the greatest neighbourhood game ever invented!)
Playing elastics (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Inside, outside, inside on!)
Being able to say inappropriate things and getting away with it 'cause your just a kid
Climbing trees
Having the freedom to be a kid and not be watched constantly by parents

I wish you'd come back and show the kids of today what they're missing out on, 'cause you really used to know how to have fun.

Labels

This is a topic that I often think about. For the life of me I can never understand why we need to give ourselves and others labels. For instance, why do people identify themselves and others as being right wing or left wing? I'm neither as I often see both sides-or sometimes no side!

Why can't we all do our own thing without having some type of label put on us?
